Degree Programs

M.A.S. Program

  • To be eligible for admission to the M.A.S. program, you must be a holder of a Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent status.

Ph.D. Program

  • To be eligible for admission to the Ph.D. program, you must be a holder of a Master’s degree or an equivalent status.
  • Students applying for the Ph.D. program should have already received extensive training that will have prepared them for advanced research. If the applicants for the Ph.D. program have received a Master’s degree in a field that is not directly related to the emphasis of the ITASIA Program or to the applicants’ proposed field of study, then it is strongly encouraged that they apply instead to the M.A.S. program.

Application Requirements

The following requirements may take additional time and planning, so please be sure to make the necessary arrangements. (2022/07/19 updated)

TOEFL iBT (Test of English as a Foreign Language) official score report or IELTS (International English Language Testing System) academic test report*

  • The TOEFL official score report or IELTS academic test report must be sent directly by either ETS to Institution Code D175 (“University of Tokyo-Grad School of Interdisciplinary Information Studies ITASIA”) or IELTS to “Information, Technology, and Society in Asia (ITASIA) Program”. The examinee’s report or copy is not acceptable.
  • Applicants must complete the exam and request the scores early, taking into consideration the time required for processing and handling.
  • The application will not be reviewed without the arrival of either the official TOEFL score report or IELTS academic test report form.
  • The TOEFL and IELTS requirement does not apply to native speakers of English. You may identify yourself as a native speaker of English only if English is your first language or you have been educated primarily in the English-language since early childhood.

GRE (Graduate Record Examinations) General Test Official Score Report*

  • The Official Score Report must be sent directly by ETS to the Graduate School of Interdisciplinary Information Studies at The University of Tokyo (U Tokyo Grad Sch Inter Info 3560). The examinee’s report or copy is not acceptable.
  • Applicants must complete the exam and request the scores early, taking into consideration the time required for processing and handling.
  • The application will not be reviewed without the arrival of the GRE score report (no exceptions).
  • Please note that ETS will issue the Official Score Report only for the tests taken within five years.

Two Evaluations for the ITASIA Program*

  • The applicant will request two evaluations at the beginning of the online application process.
  • To complete the request, you will need the official or institutional email address and the URL of the institutional web page or homepage of each referee.
  • The two external referees will receive an email with instructions on how to complete the online evaluation form.
  • These evaluations should be written by referees who can evaluate your academic potential for postgraduate study, including your skills, accomplishments and character.
  • They may be completed in either English or Japanese.
  • At least one recommender must be from outside of the GSII.

* not necessary for applicants who are currently enrolled in the ITASIA Program or applying within two years of graduation from the ITASIA Program.
