A message for students about inappropriate writings by a part-time project faculty of III/GSII

On November 24 (Sunday), I issued my first official statement about discriminatory tweets by a project associate professor of the Interfaculty Initiative in Information Studies.
This statement did not show sufficient consideration for the important and valid concerns of students in the GSII, nor did it fully express my determination to fight discrimination.
With this in mind, I would like to make known my subsequent statement of November 26 (Tuesday) which was sent to all students in the GSII via the mailing list. The content of this subsequent statement is reproduced below.
In future, I will continue to provide information on my response to this issue and any related matters.

To all students of the Graduate School of Interdisciplinary Information Studies:

Recently, Project Associate Professor Ohsawa Shohei in the Interfaculty Initiative/Graduate School of Interdisciplinary Information Studies at the University of Tokyo (hereafter, III/GSII) made inappropriate comments on social media that expressed racial discrimination towards a specific nationality or ethnic group. The III/GSII will not tolerate any form of discrimination. These comments not only damage trust in the University of Tokyo and the III/GSII, but are harmful to all our faculty members and students. As the Dean of the III/GSII, I sincerely apologize for Mr. Ohsawa’s inappropriate comments. The University of Tokyo as an institution of higher learning is committed to protecting and honoring its charter to foster an inclusive environment for education and research without any form of discrimination. In our continuing commitment to this charter, I truly regret this situation. After discovering these comments, I have repeatedly warned Mr. Ohsawa about his inappropriate conducts and asked to delete the comments, but he has not yet. I will ensure that all students in the GSII will be able to pursue their studies in a safe and welcoming environment and will vigorously pursue an appropriate and strict response to Mr. Ohsawa’s conduct as soon as possible.
